How Inflation Quietly Steals Your Wealth — And How to Stop It

You did not get a bill for it. Nobody asked your permission. And yet, over the last several years, something has quietly taken a significant slice of your purchasing power. It is called inflation. And while everyone knows the word, very few people understand the mechanism — or how to deliberately protect themselves from it.

What Inflation Actually Is

Inflation is the rate at which the general price level rises over time. At 5 percent per year, £100 today buys what £163 would buy in 10 years — your money's purchasing power has fallen by nearly 40 percent without a penny leaving your account.

The UK hit over 11 percent CPI inflation at its peak in late 2022 — the highest in 40 years. Even at the more recent lower rates, the cumulative effect on purchasing power from that spike has not reversed. Prices do not fall when inflation falls. The higher price level stays.

Why Cash Is Not Actually Safe

Cash is nominally safe — the number in your bank account will not decrease. But cash is not real-terms safe. A £10,000 emergency fund earning 2 percent while inflation runs at 4 percent is losing £200 of real value per year. Over a decade that £10,000 becomes roughly £8,200 in today's purchasing power.

This is not an argument against holding cash for emergencies — liquidity matters. But for any money with a time horizon beyond two to three years, cash is not a neutral holding. It is a slow loss.

Three Asset Classes That Protect You

The Practical Playbook

Keep your emergency fund in the highest-interest easy-access account you can find. Accept that it will lose some real value in a high-inflation period — that is the cost of liquidity. But minimise the loss.

Everything beyond your emergency fund — any money with a time horizon of five years or more — should be working in assets inside tax-efficient wrappers. A global index fund inside an ISA is not just a growth strategy. It is an inflation-protection strategy. It is how you ensure your future self can actually afford the life your present self is planning for.

The Bottom Line

Inflation is the tax that never appears on your payslip but reduces your wealth every single year. The response is not fear — it is understanding and action. Own assets. Use your wrappers. Do not leave more cash than you need sitting in low-interest accounts.
