Most budgeting advice is either too complicated to stick to or too simple to be useful. Spreadsheets with 40 categories. Apps that require manual entry of every transaction. Methods that take more time than they save.
Here is one system — 20 minutes to set up, 10 minutes per month to maintain — that will give you more financial clarity than most people ever have.
Number one: Fixed commitments. Every outgoing that is the same every month regardless of your behaviour. Rent or mortgage. Council tax. Insurance. Subscriptions. Minimum debt payments. Add them up. This number is non-negotiable.
Number two: Investment and savings target. Before you spend freely, commit a fixed amount to your future self. ISA contribution. Pension top-up. Emergency fund build. This comes out on payday by direct debit — not at the end of the month from whatever is left. Whatever is left is almost always less than you planned.
Number three: Everything else. What remains after your fixed commitments and investment target is your free-spend money. Food. Socialising. Clothes. Holidays. Spend it however you want, without tracking every individual item, because the important work is already secured.
In month one, calculate your fixed commitments. List every regular, non-negotiable outgoing and total them up. Then set your investment target — it does not need to be large. Fifty or a hundred pounds a month is a legitimate start. Set a standing order on payday. Whatever remains is your spending number.
Every month thereafter, check your fixed commitments have not changed and increase your investment target whenever your income increases or your fixed costs fall. Leave the free-spend category alone.
It works because it does not require willpower. The investment happens automatically. The fixed costs are known. What is left is yours, guilt-free, because the important work is already done before you spend a penny.
The failure mode of most budgets is spending first and saving whatever is left. The three-number system reverses that. Invest first. Pay your fixed costs. Live freely on the rest.
Three numbers. Fixed commitments. Investment target. Free spend. Set it up this weekend. It takes 20 minutes. It is the foundation everything else is built on.
