How to Check and Improve Your Credit Score in the UK

Your credit score affects the mortgage rate you will be offered. The credit card limit you will receive. Whether you will be accepted for a rental property. And yet most people either do not know their score, do not understand how it is calculated, or are doing things that damage it without realising.

How UK Credit Scoring Actually Works

There are three main credit reference agencies in the UK: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Each maintains its own credit file on you. Different lenders use different agencies — or a combination — so a good score with one does not guarantee a good score with another. You should check all three.

Free access: Experian via MSE Credit Club, Equifax via ClearScore, TransUnion via Credit Karma. All free. No trials. No card details required.

How to Improve Your Score: Practical Steps

Register on the electoral roll if you are not already — do this at gov.uk. It is quick and has an immediate positive effect.

Reduce your credit card utilisation by paying down balances before your statement date rather than just before the due date. This reduces the balance that gets reported to the agencies.

Check your credit reports for errors. Mistakes are more common than people expect. If you find an inaccurate entry, raise a dispute with the agency and, if necessary, through the Information Commissioner's Office.

If your credit history is thin — perhaps because you have never borrowed — a credit-builder credit card, used for a small regular purchase and paid in full each month, builds history without risk.

The Bottom Line

Your credit score is not permanent. It is a snapshot that responds, often quickly, to deliberate action. Know yours. Understand what is on your file. Fix anything inaccurate. Build positive history consistently. A strong credit score directly affects the price you pay to borrow — including the rate on a mortgage that may be the largest financial commitment of your life.
