Capital Gains Tax can take 18 or 24 percent of your investment profits in the UK. Or it can take nothing. The difference is not illegal avoidance — it is using the tools the government has already made available, tools that millions of UK investors simply are not using.
Any investment held inside a Stocks and Shares ISA generates zero capital gains tax — no matter how large the gain. There is no limit on the total size of an ISA. Someone with a £500,000 ISA can sell their entire holding and realise £200,000 in gains without owing a single penny in CGT.
If you have investments held outside an ISA that have grown significantly, consider a process called "bed and ISA" — selling those investments and buying them back inside your ISA. You will pay CGT on the gain at the point of sale, but all future gains will be tax-free. Done systematically each year using your annual £20,000 allowance, this is an extremely effective long-term tax management strategy.
Every UK individual has an annual CGT exempt amount — currently £3,000 per tax year. Gains below this threshold are completely tax-free. Plan your disposals across tax years to keep gains within this allowance where possible.
For couples, each partner has their own allowance — meaning a couple can realise up to £6,000 of gains per year completely tax-free. Assets can be transferred between spouses at no gain, so this spousal allowance is usable even when one partner holds the assets.
Capital losses can be offset against capital gains. If you have made a £5,000 gain on one investment and a £3,000 loss on another, your net taxable gain is only £2,000. Losses can also be carried forward to future tax years if reported to HMRC — a frequently missed planning opportunity.
At the end of each tax year, review your portfolio. If you have investments in loss, consider whether crystallising those losses makes sense as a tax management tool.
Investments inside a pension — SIPP, workplace pension — grow free of capital gains tax. For long-term investment capital, a pension is an extremely tax-efficient vehicle, particularly given the additional benefit of tax relief on contributions.
Transfers between spouses are made at no gain and no loss for CGT purposes. This lets you redistribute assets to make full use of both partners' annual exempt amounts and basic rate bands — potentially halving your CGT bill.
None of this is secret. None of it requires an accountant. It simply requires knowing the rules exist and building your investment strategy around them. Tax drag is a real and significant cost to investment returns. Eliminating it legally is one of the most impactful things you can do.
